Abstract
In this document we explore some possibilities of the geographic information systems (GIS) to support research on medical geography. The two first sections are conceptual: in the first one, the discipline is defined, paying close attention to its different objects of study; in the second, the tool is defined in views of identifying its technical and analytical possibilities. Once the meaning of the two main components of this work — medical geography and GIS—is established, in the third section, it is analyzed how the tool can support the exploration of the central questions of the discipline. Finally, in the last section the main conclusions of the document are stated.
