Abstract

Mexican industries face great opportunities due to the recent trade aperture, at the same time however, it is before great challenges to move out of this conjuncture. A sector both involved and with an important role in economic globalization and which because of it has experienced important transformations is the manufacturing one. This transformation can enable our country to reach a competitive position in global markets. In this sector we find footwear industry, which will be analyzed in the present work. This activity has the characteristic of being intensive in workforce, for which Mexico can find a favorable situation in relation to some countries and international market segments. In recent years, this industry has experienced important dynamism on foreign trade and production levels have recovered after a marked fall in the early 1990’s. Nevertheless, this is not enough to alleviate the deficiencies in the productive chain, which might have an undesired impact on efficiency and global competiveness.
