Abstract
Social assistance is one of the options to which Mexican society has given certain validity to face poverty. Nevertheless, for almost a century and a half, assistances as a public policy and action of private groups has been perceived as a system with multiple purposes, diverse courses and uncertain destiny, rater than as a single direct means, close to the goal of alleviating poverty. The changes in the ways adopted by assistance policies at a moment or determinate cycle are deemed influenced by other more or less visible processes in the broader spectrum of national development, the spheres of the State, culture and society, and associated to more general notions and integrators of social meanings; distinguishable are among the latter the notions of the public and the private. The purpose of this article is to explore the reconfiguration of assistance policies as a process related to the reconstruction of the notions of the public and the private; underscoring in these links the participation of women in Mexican social assistance. For this, the process of formation of social assistance public policies is briefly approached; some conceptual aspects of the reconstitution of the public and the private are reviewed; some of the forms taken up by women participating in the assistance sphere are examined; references between these processes and assistance policies are established in views of concreting and giving a face to the role women have performed in the processes of reconfiguration and change in Mexican social assistance, and elements are offered to recognize the importance of their participation as social actors of assistance.References
