Abstract

The topic set “women-environment-development” has established as an independent discussion in the political debate on development in recent years. The persistent independent lobbying of international women organizations, especially before and after United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), a.k.a. Rio Summit, held in 1992, has had as a result that nowadays the fact that women from the south are the most affected by the global degradation of the environment is no longer challenged. It was already evident that the representatives of the feminine ecological approach were the fiercest critics of the prevailing development paradigms; above all, before the risk that committed women were assimilated by ecological-political institutions as “global housewives in the protection of the environment”. However, in 1995 in the UN fourth Global Conference on Women, held in Peking, the issue of economy took a marginal place in the main assemblies. The debate on the ecological crisis and its repercussions for women disappeared —apparently— in the discussions on the globalization of economy, and so did the consequential feminization of poverty. The article deals with the histories of the ideas from the discussion and illustrates the current stance against the background of the relevant UN conferences for this topic in recent years.
